Preservation of paper documents
Paper
In order to ensure that documents kept on paper last as long as possible, it is necessary to consider the paper used for documenting. It is necessary to use quality fonts and to ensure that books are bound in a high quality way. Documents kept on paper are required to meet the following standards:
Data paper (ÍST EN ISO-9706)
For documents to be kept on paper, the minimum requirement is that paper is used for all documents that meet the standard ÍST EN ISO-9706 Information and documentation – Paper for documents – Requirements for permanence. It is recommended to use paper according to Article 80. It is also recommended that it bears the Nordic Ecolabel, a white Swan on a green background, a mark of long-term preservation and is labelled TCF (Totally Chlorine Free).
Document Paper (ISO-11108)
For documents of great importance to the operation, e.g. minutes, case files and agreements, it is desirable to use paper in documenting that meets the ISO-11108 Information and documentation standard - Archival paper - Requirements for permanence and durability. Document paper should meet the same conditions as data paper (ISO-9706), as well as being made from cotton ( cotton), hemp or linen and may also contain bleached chemical mass. It is recommended to use Article 80 Document paper. Packaging of paper that meets the above standards should be marked with the name of the standard or other markings indicating long-term preservation. Furthermore, paper wholesalers should be able to provide information on the quality of paper.
