Record intake and need for more space

5th March 2026

In 2025, the National Archives of Iceland received more material for preservation than ever before. It is clear that the archive needs more and better-suited space for its collections, and recently a call was issued for rental premises.

The Government Property Agency manages the archive’s facilities and has advertised for 700–1,500 square meters of space in the capital area to be used for storage and other facilities related to the receipt of records. Morgunblaðið recently covered the archive’s housing needs and the significant increase in records delivered to the National Archives in recent years.

“There are major changes taking place within the public sector, with greater emphasis now placed on digital records,” says Kristján Þorvaldsson, CFO at the National Archives, in an interview with Morgunblaðið. “Record storage rooms at institutions are being closed, which creates opportunities to reduce building space and achieve operational efficiencies. Agencies required to deliver records are bringing their documents here to the archive in increasing numbers.”

However, the streamlining and cost savings achieved through the transfer of records from government institutions requires additional space at the National Archives, and such investment contributes to long-term operational efficiency within the public sector.
