Private archives in the open house of the National Archives

18th June 2025

About twenty people attended the opening of the National Archives of Iceland on Friday, June 6th. The opening emphasized the importance of private archives, their preservation and their registration.

Visitors had the opportunity to view selected documents from private archives and talk to experts about archival management, archival registration, packaging and other matters regarding long-term preservation. Discussions were wide ranging, including preservation value, access to data and the importance of primary sources for future research. The guests were pleased with the event and the interest of the guests in the subject reflected the growing awareness of the value of private archives for the history and culture of the community.

In view of the positive response, the National Archives aims to hold more similar events after the summer holidays, where the public’s awareness and interest in the preservation of private documents will continue to be promoted. It is also planned to give interested people the opportunity to participate actively in the registration and completion of private archives, in cooperation with the museum’s experts. This will give people a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation of historical documents.
