New online catalogue of the National Archives
2nd October 2025
The catalogue is the core of the archive's operations, as it contains all information about the archives' collections—document records, loans, and more. In recent months, work has been underway to implement a new document registry system at the National Archives. Now, the launch of a new online catalogue is underway, which will replace the older one.

The next major step is now being taken with the launch of the new online catalogue, which offers more powerful search capabilities than before. In addition, users will be able to browse through all records. It will also be possible to create a user account, allowing users to order documents for viewing in the reading room or collect entries from the document records into workbooks for further review later.
However, it will still be possible to order documents the old-fashioned way—by sending an email to upplysingar@skjalasafn.is or by visiting the reading room in person.
The new website was launched on October 2 and can be found at https://skjalaskrar.skjalasafn.is. Introduction videos on how to use the new site can be viewed here.
The new site contains records for more than 3,900 archival collections, consisting of hundreds of thousands of document boxes and more than one million folders.

The old catalogue will still be accessible for the time being at https://eldriskrar.skjalasafn.is.
