The first item on the agenda focused on sharing experiences regarding the implementation of, and follow-up to, the strategic plans of the national archives. A Nordic expert group on strategic management presented approaches to performance evaluation used by the individual archives and facilitated a workshop on the topic.

The Danish National Archives led a discussion on the preservation of digital records. The discussion addressed the complex challenges that can arise when preserving different types of digital information and considered how such issues are handled in appraisal and disposal processes. Participants also explored the common characteristics and challenges faced by the Nordic national archives in preserving born-digital records.

The National Archives of Finland presented its experience in providing digital copies of archival materials on demand as an alternative to consulting original records in reading rooms. This initiative is a high priority in Finland as part of ongoing efforts to improve archive services. Presentations covered usage patterns, production workflows, user feedback, process improvements, and Sweden’s plans to introduce a similar service.

The Nordic National Archivists are currently working on a white paper or joint statement addressing three key themes and challenges: trustworthy artificial intelligence, efficient public administration, and democratic resilience. During the discussions, participants also agreed that information security should be included among these focus areas. Work is likewise underway on a joint statement by the European National Archivists concerning preparedness and the protection of critical infrastructure. This initiative is being developed alongside the implementation of the CER and NIS2 Directives. The statement is expected to be considered at the European National Archivists’ meeting in Dublin in October.

Finland will host the Nordic Archives Days in Helsinki on 18–20 September 2028. The first day will be devoted to expert meetings, while the conference itself will take place over the following two days. Three main themes have been proposed: trustworthy artificial intelligence, efficient public administration, and democratic resilience.
