New action plan for the European National Archives Consultative Group adopted
12th December 2024
The group's meeting in Budapest in October last year approved a 10-point action plan for the next five years for a new European document policy.
The European Archives Group (EAG) is a consultative group for European national archives that acts as an advisory expert group for the Council of Europe on archives. At the end of May, a new European policy on archives for 2025-2030 was adopted. The group’s last meeting in Budapest approved a plan of action for the implementation of the policy. On the basis of the policy, 10 actions were developed for the archives, two each year for the next five years.
The new European Policy connects EU policy and legislative acts with current challenges in the field of archives and provides strategic guidance for archives. It is divided into two main themes:
Archives supporting democracy
Maintaining citizen’s trust in archives in the Digital Era
The action plan addresses issues such as the independence of archives and their work; the participation of the archives in the development of civil society; artificial intelligence; data-driven economies; electronic identification and signatures; and the ongoing digital transformation of public services and more.
