National archivist visits the Regional East Iceland
10th June 2024
Stefán Bogi Sveinsson and his colleagues at the East Iceland Regional Archives in Egilsstadir welcomed Hrefna Róbertsdóttir general director of the National Archives in Egilsstadir on Thursday, June 6th.
Regional archives in Iceland are independent public archives that are under professional supervision of the National Archives. The archives are 20 and located around the country and are visited regularly by a National Archives official.
During a recent visit to the Regional Archives of the Eastfjords, Hrefna Róbertsdóttir met with the staff and discussed the issue of archives in the modern era. The Regional Archives of the Eastfjords play an important role in the region and the two roles of archives were discussed – the administrative role and the cultural role – and how they both overlap and strengthen each other. The administrative role is less visible from the outside, but it is still very important, long-term electronic storage of documents and monitoring of the proper handling of cases by the parties that are required to deliver the collections.

The new exhibition of the Regional Archives of Iceland about Margrét Sigfúsdóttir, a 20th century worker, teacher and poet in Fljótsdal, was also examined.
