Meeting of European National Archivists in Dublin
30th October 2026
Two forums for European National Archivists, the European Archives Group (EAG), an EU body, and the European Board of National Archives (EBNA), recently held meetings in Dublin. The meetings were hosted by the National Archives of Ireland and the European Commission.
The first day began with a presentation on the National Archives of Ireland's work to digitise the 1926 Census. This was followed by a discussion on the establishment of a new EAG subgroup on emerging technologies. A draft mandate had been circulated in advance, and its content was discussed extensively.
The second topic was related to the EU's vision for a data-driven economy and focused on new guidelines from the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) on the processing of personal data for scientific research. Presentations were given by the European Commission and the National Archives of Latvia.
The final topic concerned records relating to crisis management and the implementation of the CER and NIS2 Directives. A draft white paper, prepared by the national archives of Sweden, Finland and Denmark, had been circulated ahead of the meeting. Several initiatives were discussed, including a survey to assess the current situation, a common framework, data deposit and joint guidelines.
The second day began with a presentation of the results of a survey of European national archives covering a range of areas. The findings provided a useful overview of similarities and differences between the national archives.
The next item on the agenda was a discussion of possible topics for future EBNA meetings. A wide range of suggestions were put forward, which will form the basis for a roadmap for future EBNA meetings.
The German Federal Archives (Bundesarchiv) gave a presentation on challenges related to ensuring the authenticity of born-digital records.
