In today's technological society, the importance of databases is increasing. Databases are useful for purposeful analysis, processing and publication of research. The topic of the National Archives of Iceland's Research Day 2024 is databases and the opportunities they provide for research. The conference will be held at the National Archives of Iceland at Laugavegur 162, on Thursday, 14th November. The program is open to all, beginning at 13:00 and is scheduled to end at 16:00.
Speakers will present historical databases, discuss their usefulness and benefits, presentation, dissemination and public publication. Speakers will discuss the main challenges in developing databases and what the vision of the future might be in the perfect world.
For many years, the National Archives of Iceland have been developing and creating databases with the aim of communicating certain content to the public and academics, while promoting new research. Many of these projects have been carried out in close cooperation with other institutions. Access to these data has not only increased greatly with the inclusion of content in databases, but digital restoration has enabled people to work thoroughly with the original data, regardless of location.
Today most historical databases are accessible on the website heimildir.is, but work is now underway to build a new media website with a consistent interface for all databases.
