Engine Department in Gunnarsholt repairs roads in Þjórsárdalsskógur

15th September 2025

Last week, essential road improvements were successfully implemented within the Þjórsárdalur National Forest. The utilisation of machinery and personnel from Land and Forest Iceland's Gunnarsholt workstation significantly streamlined the process, resulting in considerable efficiencies in terms of time, cost, and resources.

The primary access routes through the Ásólfsstaðir and Skriðufell forest areas within the Þjórsárdalur National Forest underwent long-due road refurbishment last week, covering approximately two kilometers. According to Jóhannes H. Sigurðsson, Assistant Forest Manager in South Iceland, the roads had degraded to such extent that minimal surface aggregates were remaining. Materials were sourced from a gravel mine on Þjórsáreyri, within the Ásólfsstaðir property, facilitating efficient project access.

Mr. Sigurðsson notes the advantages of consolidating two former institutions, resulting in the new Land and Forest Iceland possessing the internal resources to execute projects like these. This eliminates the need for external contractors, reducing associated costs, timelines, and logistical challenges.

He also emphasises the high quality of the completed work. These road improvements significantly enhance operational efficiency within the forest, while also minimising wear and tear on vehicles and other equipment and relieves strain on personnel and cargo.
