The 4x4 Travel Club pitching in at Þjórsárdalur

14th July 2025

The 4x4 Travel Club's yearly land reclamation excursion took place in Sandárstunga, Þjórsárdalur, on June 7th. For more than two decades, the club has been dedicated to land reclamation efforts, including the distribution of fertiliser and seeds in areas with sparse vegetation, as well as the planting of birch trees, initially in Þórsmörk and now in Þjórsárdalur.

Following the application of 600 kilograms of fertiliser, the planting of 1,400 birch seedlings, the insertion of cuttings, and the sowing of white clover seeds to provide future nourishment, the group enjoyed a well-deserved picnic in a lovely nearby grove. Subsequently, the group visited a swimming pool and concluded the day with a delightful grilled lamb meal at the wooded and cozy campsite in Sandártunga, Þjórsárdalur.

Berglind says that the work of the Travel Club is invaluable when it comes to restoring the landscape and shows how outdoors people can contribute to nature conservation. At the same time, it underlines the responsibility of travelling around the country in harmony with nature.

The 4x4 Travel Club, established in 1980, brings together individuals who share a passion for jeep touring and outdoor pursuits. With a strong emphasis on safety, nature conservation, and education, the Club actively organises tours and events that promote responsible tourism and sustainable access to the Icelandic environment.

We eagerly anticipate the upcoming 4x4 land reclamation tours!
