Quality criteria for the selection of land for forestry

23rd September 2025

The initial implementation of Land and Forest Iceland's quality criteria for land selection in forestry is currently underway at the Institute. A review of these criteria is anticipated in the near future, informed by practical experience gathered throughout the summer and autumn. The complete quality criteria documentation is accessible in Icelandic on the Land and Forest Iceland website.

This document presents the outcomes of the steering group's efforts at Land and Forest Iceland. This group, established on August 27, 2024, was tasked with coordinating projects within Land and Forest Iceland that adhere to established standards and quality criteria. Their responsibilities also encompass the organisation of work methodologies and the facilitation of necessary consultations with relevant institutions, experts, and stakeholders. This initiative aligns with the government's land reclamation and forestry policy, "Land and Life," specifically addressing action 2.3, which mandates the development and implementation of new quality criteria for selecting land suitable for forestry. The development of these quality criteria was conducted in close collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate.

This initial edition reflects the input received from both internal and external stakeholders. It is anticipated that this version of the quality criteria will be revised within the year, incorporating insights gained from their practical application during the summer and autumn.
