Excellent seedlings for the autumn planting

28th August 2025

Distribution of forest seedlings for autumn planting is currently at its peak. Yesterday, the Björnskot distribution center in Skeið received plant shipments designated for projects within Árnes county. Over two hundred thousand seedlings are slated for deployment across various county projects in the upcoming weeks. The seedlings are reported to be in exceptional condition, which is expected to yield favorable outcomes.

Valgerður Erlingsdóttir, Forestry Consultant, has provided the attached photographs documenting the ongoing operations at the Björnskot distribution center. These images showcase the arrival of forestry seedlings from Kvistabær nursery in Reykholt, which are subsequently being prepared for autumn planting by forestry professionals across the Árnes county.

The provided images showcase Jón Þór Birgisson, Forestry Consultant, and Harpa Dís Harðardóttir, Plant Distribution Manager at Land and Forest Iceland, alongside French interns currently engaged in their three-month internship at Land and Forest Iceland's Þjórsárdalur work station. The interns conveyed positive feedback regarding their Icelandic experience, with the weather being the only noted area of concern, despite favorable conditions on the day. Additionally, Björn Bjarndal Jónsson, a forester and farmer, was observed at Björnskot, procuring plants for planting at his farm, Kluftir, situated in Hrunamannahreppur.

According to Harpa Dís, seedlings from Sólskógar in Akureyri, along with those from Kvistabær, exhibit exceptional quality this season, indicating positive outcomes.

The distribution plan includes approximately eighty thousand mixed-species seedlings earmarked for farming forest projects, with an additional ten thousand designated for community organisation initiatives supported by the Vorviður Fund. The primary focus, however, will be the planting of approximately 120,000 seedlings in the Þjórsárdalur area, encompassing Hekluskógar and related projects.
