New viewer on the classification of farmland
27th October 2025
Land and Forest Iceland has launched an informational web viewer presenting the results of agricultural land classification across all municipalities, specifically regarding cultivable capacity.

This resource is a component of Land and Forest Iceland's mandate to lead initiatives outlined in the national planning strategy for 2024-2038, approved by the Althingi last year. The strategy prioritises the mapping of all arable land suitable for food production. The web viewer displays the total area of mapped arable land within each municipality, along with proportional breakdowns based on agricultural land quality. This information is accessible in either hectares or square kilometers.
The foundational classification of arable land for the entire country was developed by EFLA Consulting Engineering, under the oversight of Land and Forest Iceland. This classification adheres to guidelines established at the time by the Ministry of Industry and Innovation and methodologies developed at the Agricultural University of Iceland.
