New version of Skógarkolefni set of rules
13th May 2026
Skógarkolefni (Forest Carbon Code) has released version 2.1, effective from 11 May 2026. The latest revisions are minor. Changes have mainly been made to Chapters 2.2 and 3.3, providing clearer information on requirements and guidance.

In 2.2, the main intent was to make a clearer description of the initial afforestation plan and to simplify the mapping rules. Also, to emphasise the purpose of the overall management plan for the continuing verification process.
In 3.3, a rewording of the requirements was needed to clarify the reliability of the Carbon Calculator output. Also, a clearer and more flexible reduction calculations were issued for projects with reduced seedling density.
Reference to the new Icelandic standard ÍST 95: Sustainable Forestry guidance, has been added and outdated references removed.
The model for Skógarkolefni was the British standard UK Woodland Carbon Code, and the first edition of Skógarkolefni, which was published at the end of 2019, was mostly a translation and localisation of that British standard. In the spring of 2023, version 2.0 of Skógarkolefni was published, in accordance with the development of the Icelandic legal and regulatory environment and the introduction of the technical specification ÍST TS 92:2022 Carbon offsetting: Specification with guidance, which can be found on the website of the Icelandic Standards Council. The nature of standards is to be in continuous development with continuous improvements towards increased quality and in line with the development of society and the environment.
The Skógarkolefni 2.1 set of rules is available on the Skógarkolefni website. A PDF version is available for download. However, only the online version should be used for citation purposes.
