Live Stream: The Bonn Challenge at COP30
12th November 2025
A special forum on land use and community wellbeing will be broadcast live on Monday, 17 November, during the ongoing COP30 climate conference in Belém, Brazil. The event will look back at the fifteen years since the launch of the Bonn Challenge, a global effort to restore degraded and deforested land.

The forum is organised by the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF), an international platform promoting sustainable land use and management of natural resources. GLF connects people worldwide — including the public, scientists, policymakers, investors, and the private sector — to share knowledge and practical solutions for healthy landscapes.
The full programme of the event can be viewed online, but Icelandic audiences may be particularly interested in the session on the Bonn Challenge, scheduled for 18:15 Icelandic time (15:15 in Belém). The session will present the achievements of the initiative since its launch fifteen years ago and provide an opportunity to assess its impacts on ecosystems, climate action, and the resilience of local communities.
Countries around the world have pledged to restore 220 million hectares of degraded land under the Bonn Challenge. The discussion will explore what progress has been made, where gaps remain, and how to reinvigorate ambition in light of changing global conditions related to climate and biodiversity goals.
Iceland has joined the Bonn Challenge by setting a national goal to expand birch woodland cover to five percent of the country’s total land area.
This short session, hosted by the Global Landscapes Forum at COP30 in Brazil, is open to everyone and free of charge. Participants can register on the GLF website. The event offers an opportunity to reflect on how the Bonn Challenge has influenced ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and community wellbeing across the world.
