IUFRO 2024 Pre and Post Congress tours

2nd February 2024

About five hundred people have now signed up for excursions, which are being offered in connection with the IUFRO World Conference which will take place in Stockholm, Sweden, in June. Two Icelandic tours are still available and six tours of Scandinavia and the Baltic countries.

IUFRO World Congress Excursions 2024

The tours around Iceland are on the one hand, the Glaciers of Iceland where they will drive along the south coast towards the eastern fjords ending in the town of Egilsstaðir. Guide on this trip will be Bjarni Diðrik Sigurðsson, professor at the Agricultural University of Iceland. Secondly there is Highlands of Iceland tour, starting in South Iceland, heading northwards through the highlands and then east to Egilsstaðir under the guidance of forest geneticist Aðalsteinn Sigurgeirsson. Tourists explore nature in the country, visit forests and get to know the forestry activities and forestry research and development in the country.

It is a similar story for the tours to Scandinavia and the Baltic states. On the one hand, these tours are intended to introduce the countries, their culture and history, and on the other hand, to touch on interesting aspects related to forests, forest research and development in the industry. The tour From Coast to Coast takes the high road from Sundsvall in Sweden to the Trondheim Fjord in Mid-Norway, exploring the industrial ecosystems of the boreal landscape, partly by hiking. At the heart of the coniferous forests, travelers will get to know nature and culture Under the Midnight Sun, traveling around northern parts of Sweden and Finland. A Voyage to the Fjords begins in central Sweden heading to the fjords of southern Norway, while the tour From Castles to Canopies takes you to areas in southern Sweden touching on forest resilience with themes like diseases, diversity and products, as well as cultural and historic traits. From Tree to Table is the theme of yet another trip which crosses southern Sweden and the strait to eastern Denmark, mainly focusing on damage, adaptation to climate change and forest products. Finally, there is a tour of the three Baltic countries, the Green Jewels of Europe, as they call it in their presentation.

You can find out more about the trips in an online brochure and in more detail on the conference website.
