How to grow forests in a treeless land
11th August 2025
A new episode of the Razor Science Show has just been released online, discussing deforestation and deforesting in Iceland and how Icelanders are currently working to reforest the country. It discusses Bonn projects such as Hekluskógar, how the forces of destruction were stopped at Þórsmörk, and the cultivation of diverse forests in the country.

The "Razor Science Show" series, produced by the European division of CGTN, a Chinese state television channel, features an episode filmed in Iceland that explores the challenge of reforestation in a treeless environment.
The episode features host Gabrielle Lawrence interviewing five representatives from Land and Forest Iceland. Samson Bjarnar Harðarson and Hrefna Jensdóttir discuss the historical decline of land quality in Iceland, the disappearance of forests, and the subsequent land reclamation work, highlighting ongoing replanting efforts, including Bonn projects near Hekla and other locations. Aðalsteinn Sigurgeirsson explains the use of hardy pioneer species near the coast to create shelter, facilitating the growth of more demanding species over time. The episode concludes with a segment in Þórsmörk, where Hreinn Óskarsson and Chas Goemans describe the area's near-complete erosion state in early 20th Century and the successful re-establishment of birch and other vegetation in the area. Þátturinn gefur góða hugmynd um markmiðin og aðferðirnar sem beitt er. The television coverage gives a good idea of the goals of land reclamation and afforestation efforts in Iceland and the methods used.
