The birch receives a boost at Geitasandur

28th May 2025

The land reclamation project at Geitasandur, which involves planting birch trees and encouraging natural reseeding, is progressing well. Recently, fertiliser was applied to a large birch plantation established last year. The progress is being carefully monitored.

In autumn of last year, approximately 33 hectares of birch were planted at Geitasandur in Rangárvellir, encompassing Melhólar. Recently, a artificial fertiliser was applied across the entire planting area. This application has proven effective, providing benefits to both the birch trees and the surrounding land, resulting in enhanced overall vegetation health. The fertiliser application utilises an NP formula, delivering roughly 50 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare.

Land and Forest Iceland prioritises ongoing monitoring of project sites to ensure consistent progress. This proactive approach allows for immediate remediation should further reclamation become necessary, optimising project outcomes. The following video depicts fertiliser application within a project area.

Land and Forest Iceland maintains a fleet of three tractors for fertiliser distribution — two in South Iceland and one in North Iceland — and supplements this capacity through nationwide contractor agreements.
