Land and Forest Iceland

A venerable podium back in the woods

29th October 2024

Two members of the Reykjavík City Council's gardening department recently paid a visit to the Land and Forest Iceland office in Mógilsá. They presented the office with an old podium, handcrafted for the department years ago from local Icelandic wood.

Hallgrímur Hallgrímsson and Salka Einarsdóttir from the City of Reykjavík standing by the talk pole.

The podium, crafted from an Icelandic Sitka spruce stem, was constructed several decades ago by Ólafur Oddsson, a skilled craftsman and former educational officer for the Icelandic Forest Service. Mr. Oddsson generously donated the podium to the city's horticultural department. Throughout his career, he demonstrated exceptional expertise in forestry and entrepreneurship, regularly conducting educational courses on the advantages of woodlands and practical timber utilisation. Mr. Oddsson played a pivotal role in promoting forest education, collaborating with educators nationwide to establish outdoor learning environments and teaching facilities within the country's forests. Sadly, Mr. Oddsson passed away in early 2023.

Owing to structural modifications and spatial constraints within the municipal horticultural department, the decision was made to return the talking pole to Land and Forest Iceland for preservation purposes, thereby honoring the craftsmanship of this distinguished entrepreneur and advocate. Hallgrímur Hallgrímsson, the director of the Reykjavík City Forest Service, presented the artifact alongside his colleague Salka Einarsdóttir. The accompanying photograph, captured by Bjarki Þór Kjartansson, depicts them standing beside the talking pole.

Land and Forest Iceland expresses its gratitude for their kind gift and visit.
