Vaglir, Fnjóskadalur,
607 Akureyri

The new forest shelter that has been under construction in Vaglaskógur in recent years will be officially inaugurated on Friday, 26 June. To celebrate the occasion, guests are invited to a gathering in the shelter from 14:00 to 16:00.
Traditional campfire coffee, Icelandic pastries, marshmallows and popcorn cooked over an open fire will be served, accompanied by live music.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about the main tree species used in Icelandic forestry, as well as the products, benefits and recreational opportunities that Vaglaskógur provides today.
Built from timber harvested in Iceland’s national forests, the new shelter greatly improves year-round facilities for visitors to Vaglaskógur, offering restrooms, shelter from the weather and a welcoming space for gatherings.
Vaglaskógur, located in Fnjóskadalur valley, is one of Iceland’s oldest national forests. National forests are managed by Land and Forest Iceland and are open to the public year-round across the country. Vaglaskógur was protected from grazing in 1909, marking the beginning of forestry activities at Vaglir. Today, the area hosts a regional station of Land and Forest Iceland, where staff carry out a wide range of forest management activities and process forest products from the surrounding area.
The forest is also a popular destination for both local residents and travellers. Every year, thousands of visitors come to enjoy its natural surroundings, outdoor recreation and opportunities for berry and mushroom picking.
Welcome to Vaglaskógur!
