Pharmacy branches
A pharmacy branch is part of a pharmacy and is operated in a community where no pharmacy is in operation. The branch is operated under the responsibility of the pharmacy licence holder and falls under their pharmacy licence.
The services a pharmacy branch may provide depend on how it is classified.
Licences and applications
Dispensing of medicines from a pharmacy branch
Where a pharmacy branch is permitted to dispense medicines on prescription, dispensing must not take place without prior verification by a pharmacist.
If no pharmacist works at the pharmacy branch, a pharmacist at the pharmacy from which the pharmacy branch is operated must review the prescription and the labels before the medicine is dispensed. The prescription and labels must be sent to the pharmacy by fax or by comparable means, and the pharmacy branch employee must first have written on the prescription the Nordic product number or an equivalent identifier of the medicine they intend to dispense for the prescription.
Dispensing from the emergency supply of essential medicines at a category C pharmacy branch must be recorded in the incident log and specifically identified.
Identification and signage of pharmacy branches
Pharmacy branches must be clearly identified with the name of the pharmacy, and it must be clearly stated whether the branch is a category A, B or C pharmacy branch.
Labelling of medicines
Medicines must be labelled with the name of the pharmacy branch from which they are dispensed.
Responsibilities and supervision by the pharmacy licence holder
The pharmacy licence holder must regularly supervise the operation of their pharmacy branch and bears full responsibility for ensuring that applicable laws and regulations are complied with there. At least once a month, the pharmacy licence holder must review the stock of controlled medicines, the temperature records for medicine storage, the prescriptions and the cleaning schedule of the branch, and sign off on the review.
The pharmacy branch must keep a logbook, which the pharmacy licence holder signs after each inspection.
