The following activities are subject to supervision by the Icelandic Medicines Agency (IMA).

Sale of medicines by veterinarians

Under Article 35 of the Medicinal Products Act, the Icelandic Medicines Agency (IMA) may grant veterinarians a licence to sell medicines intended for use in animals, provided that certain conditions are met:

  1. They hold a valid licence to practise as a veterinarian in Iceland, cf. the Act on Veterinarians and Animal Health Services,

  2. they have notified the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST) that they have commenced veterinary practice and of the location of the practice.

See guidelines for veterinarians who sell medicines.

A veterinarian's licence to sell medicines intended for use in animals is limited to the sale and supply of the following medicines for animals under the treatment of the veterinarian concerned:

  1. Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines for animals

  2. Medicines prescribed by a veterinarian, cf. Regulation No. 539/2000 on the authority of veterinarians to prescribe medicines, as amended

An electronic application form for a veterinarian's licence to sell medicines intended for use in animals is available on IMA's My pages.

Dentists

The remit of the Icelandic Medicines Agency (IMA) relates to the work of dentists in that they prescribe medicines and use medicines in their work.

Because dentists are authorised to prescribe medicines, they have the same ethical obligation as doctors to report adverse reactions. Dentists are encouraged to report adverse reactions.

The Medicine Price Catalogue contains information on the medicines that dentists are permitted to prescribe at any given time.

Brokers of medicinal products

The Icelandic Medicines Agency (IMA) supervises brokers of medicinal products.

Under Article 31(1) of the Medicinal Products Act, brokering of medicinal products is only permitted for those who have registered as brokers with IMA. IMA maintains and publishes on its website a list of those authorised to broker medicinal products.

To register, the name of the registrant, the business name and a permanent address must be provided. Registrants shall notify IMA of any changes to this information without undue delay.

IMA may remove a broker from the list if it emerges that the broker has seriously and repeatedly breached the rules governing the activity.
