Improvements in the Operations of Iceland Health
25th February 2026
New organizational chart and changes in operations.

In recent years, significant improvements have been made to the operations of Iceland Health, which have resulted in increased efficiency and strengthening of key aspects of the organization's operations. There is a need to go further in strengthening the organization through increased specialization, digital development and more efficient processes. Particular attention will be paid to the organization's core projects by strengthening contract negotiation, more targeted cost and needs analysis, as well as more robust contract follow-up and monitoring.
Although the organization's finances have been strengthened somewhat in recent years, its projects have grown and it is clear that it is difficult to meet the growing scope as well as build and strengthen key aspects of the organization's operations within the current financial framework. At the same time, there is a need to strengthen budgets and internal optimization.
In this light, it has been decided to further strengthen the organization's operations and performance with several key actions, including: include increased emphasis on core issues in the area of contract drafting and contract follow-up and greater efficiency through more powerful digital solutions and automation in processing.
In addition, the board of directors of Iceland Health has approved a new organizational chart for the organization, which includes a reduction in the number of organizational units and the reduction of the superstructure, including by reducing the number of managers. At the same time, expertise and coordination in professional areas will be strengthened.
There is a need for further transformation and it is inevitable to cut twelve jobs at Iceland Health. This decision aims to adapt operations to changed emphases, make better use of the funds that the organization has at its disposal and respond to the underlying deficit. The goal is to strengthen operations in the long term and ensure that Iceland Health can fulfill its statutory role in a purposeful and responsible manner.
Iceland Health plays a key role in ensuring the public's access to good and effective healthcare, and it is of great concern to the public that it fulfills its roles in a robust manner. The agency is now taking difficult but responsible steps to strengthen its operations and adapt it to changing tasks and increased demands. With clearer priorities, a simpler organization and increased specialization, we are strengthening the agency's capabilities and ensuring that it is better able to fulfill its role in the future
says Sigurður Helgi Helgason, CEO of Iceland Health.
