Anniversary conference in Harpa on 30 September

In 1936, the Social Insurance Act came into force and subsequently State Social Security Institute was established the same year. This laid the foundation for the safety net that Icelanders enjoy today, and over time, the Social Insurance Administration became the Social Insurance Administration, the Iceland Health and the Directorate of Labour.
Conference in Harpa
The ninetieth anniversary of social security will be commemorated on September 30th with an open conference in Harpa where social security in Iceland will be discussed and the history, development and future of the system will be reviewed. The interaction between social security and the business community, trade unions, pension funds and research in the field will also be discussed. There will be foreign spokespersons and presentations will be given by the OECD, ISSA International Association of Social Security Institutions, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Family Affairs of Malta, as well as the directors of social security institutions in the Nordic countries.

9.00 - Opening
The Minister of Social Affairs and Housing delivers an address.
The Minister of Health delivers an address.
9.15 - Administration and stakeholders
The directors of the Social Insurance Administration, Iceland Health and the Directorate of Labour will give presentations on the main challenges and opportunities in their respective fields.
Panel discussions with stakeholders where collaboration, services to users and the future vision of the welfare system will be discussed.
10.45 – Coffee break
11.15 – Involvement and interaction between the business community, pension funds, trade unions and academia
Representatives of the Confederation of Icelandic Employers, the National Association of Pension Funds, ASÍ and the University of Iceland will give presentations.
12.15 - Lunch
13.00 - The situation in an international context – Experience, knowledge and the future of social security
OECD: The future of social protection and social policy. ISSA: Social security, navigating change for success. Ministry for social policy and the family, Malta: Development of social insurance in Malta, evolution to present day, and perspectives on the future of social protection and social policy.
14.30 – Coffee break
14:40 – Panel discussion with representatives of the Nordic social security institutions
End of conference and summary.
