Career Opportunities – Executive Positions: Directors of Services and Finance and Oversight

Iceland Health is a key institution in the Icelandic healthcare system that ensures the rights of the insured and equal access to good and cost-effective healthcare services with the aim of protecting health.

Iceland Health mediates, through agreements and payment systems, the vast majority of the funding that flows to Icelandic healthcare services, around 300 billion ISK per year. Efficient and effective use of these funds is a key factor in ensuring the success of healthcare services.

Executive directors will be part of the management team of Iceland Health and hold positions on the five-member executive board. Executive directors report directly to the CEO and are responsible for development and growth as well as daily management.

Executive Director – Finance and Oversight

The Chief Financial and Oversight Officer is responsible for key tasks in financial management, internal and external oversight, risk management, and support for policy development and decision-making. The position represents a unique opportunity to shape a crucial aspect of the operations of Iceland Health and to contribute to the effective utilization of public funds in the healthcare system.

Main tasks and responsibilities

Responsibility for the finances and accounting of Iceland Health with the aim of ensuring good use of the ISK 300 billion for which the institution is responsible

Planning of Iceland Health budget items and regular settlements, as well as analysis of deviations and follow-up of deviations from the plan

Analysis and dissemination of financial information in support of policy making and decision-making

Overview of Iceland Health payment processes and measures to increase their efficiency and security

Development and strengthening of risk management in collaboration with risk managers

Policy formulation and development of the Agency's internal and external controls

Education and qualification requirements

University education that is useful in the job, a master's degree is an advantage

Excellent leadership and communication skills, which are reflected in drive, initiative, reform-oriented thinking and successful management experience

Extensive experience of financial management in a challenging environment

Successful experience in strategic planning, change management, digital transformation of finance, and team building

Excellent analytical skills, solution-oriented thinking and the ability to convey complex information in Icelandic and English in speech and in writing

Knowledge and experience of the structure and development of monitoring systems is an advantage

Knowledge and experience of public finance and administration is an advantage


Managing Director – Services

Iceland Health provides the vast majority of Icelanders with direct or indirect services each year. The job therefore represents a unique opportunity to shape an important part of the operations of Iceland Health and to promote accessible, efficient and professional services within the health care system.

This is a key position where work is done on the development of services, simplification of processes and support for policy formulation and decision-making. The organization's targeted service to the users of the health service is one of the key factors in ensuring its effectiveness.

The department employs about 60 people. One of the roles of the department is to make decisions on people's right to use certain health services, both in Iceland and abroad. The Division is also responsible for processing applications for payments for patient and accident insurance. Every year, close to one application is processed for every citizen. The manager promotes a good service experience for all those who need to communicate with Iceland Health.

Main tasks and responsibilities

To manage the service division and promote a good and comprehensive service experience for all those who interact with Iceland Health, whether they are individuals or professionals

Supervise the projects of the service center that handles the front-line services of Iceland Health

Promote the dissemination of clear and accessible information about Iceland Health to individuals and professionals

Lead improvements in the development of services and service processes, e.g. through the implementation of increased automation and artificial intelligence solutions

Ensure systematic procedures and that decisions are made in accordance with regulations, laws and other criteria

Analyze and disseminate information on services to support policy-making and decision-making

Education and qualification requirements

University education that is useful in the job, a master's degree is an advantage
