187 new nursing rooms in two new nursing homes

12th December 2025

Two new nursing homes will add 187 nursing rooms in the capital area next year and 2027

The results of the tender for the operation of new nursing homes are now available. Iceland Health has decided to accept the offers from Eir and Heilsuvernd. Eir will be responsible for operating the nursing home at Nauthólsvegur 50 in Reykjavík, while Heilsuvernd will manage the nursing home at Urðarhvarf 16 in Kópavogur.

With the establishment of these two new nursing homes, a total of 187 new nursing care rooms are being added in the capital area. There are around 3,000 nursing care rooms across the country, so this represents a considerable addition.

Extensive and successful experience of the operators

Both operators have extensive and successful experience in running nursing homes. Eir has been handed Nauthólsvegur 50 and Heilsuvernd Urðarhvarf 16. According to the Public Procurement Act No. 120/2016 (OIL), it is permissible to enter into contracts without a waiting period, and therefore a contract has now been established.

The nursing homes will come into operation in 2026 and 2027. It has been quite some time since new nursing homes have been built in the capital area, with the last one, Hrafnista on Sléttuvegi, opening in 2020.
