23rd May 2023

A decision has been made to relocate the largest part of HSN's operations in Akureyri to Sunnuhlíð at the beginning of 2024. Home care will continue in its current facilities, psychosocial services and mental health teams will move to Hvannavellir 14. Work is underway to find accommodation for the part of the management located in Akureyri.

It has long been known that the healthcare facilities on Hafnarstræti 99 are not suitable for the activities that take place there. Last winter the air quality started getting worse due to ever changing weather from heavy frost to warmer weather. The engineering firm EFLA was hired to take the premises out and measure potential mould. A long story short, mould was found in several spaces. It was decided to rent a place in Hvannavellir 14 for psychosocial services and mental health teams. This allows employees to move from the most disadvantaged spaces to the premises that were used for the psychosocial services.

The aim was to split the operations into two units when the health centre in Sunnuhlíð would be ready in December 2023. Analysis of the cost of repairing the facilities in Hafnarstræti 99 opened the conclusion that the cost of renovations would be very high. It makes no sense to charge for such expenses when the plan is to move out of the premises at the end of 2025 when the health clinic on Þórunnarstræti will be ready. It is reasonable that when this premises are restored, future use of the premises should be made had in mind.

The decision has therefore been made to delay splitting up the operations and transfer the bulk of the clinical operations to Sunnuhlíð at the beginning of 2024. This will include all medical services, nursing clinics, prenatal care, infant and toddler health care and other services. Home care services will continue on the premises of the Pentecostal Church, psychosocial services and mental health teams on Hvannavellir 14, 3rd floor. The part of the management that is located in Akureyri will be moving as well, although it is still unclear where.

With these measures, HSN believes that the interests of staff and service recipients of the primary healthcare in Akureyri are best served.
