A knowledge and counselling centre on ME disease will be established
12th May 2023
Minister of Health Willum Þór Þórsson has decided to entrust the Akureyri Hospital in collaboration with the Health Care Institution of North Iceland with the establishment of a knowledge and consultation centre on ME disease. Today is the International ME Day which is aimed at raising awareness of the disease that causes long-term muscle pain and inflammation in the brain or spinal cord.
The planned establishment of the Centre of Knowledge and Counselling on ME disease has been given the working title Akureyri Clinic. As part of its establishment, the Centre will improve the understanding of ME and related diseases and promote improved services for patients. Among other things, it is planned that GPs will be able to consult the centre regarding cases that require diagnosis confirmation and to provide patients with counselling. The clinic would thus become a coordinating body for services to ME patients nationwide, as well as working on documenting the disease and promoting research.
