Flu vaccinations to be offered this fall

24th September 2026

Flu vaccinations will be offered at the health centers of Heilsugæsla höfuðborgarsvæðisins starting in mid-October for people in high-risk groups and in November for others who wish to be vaccinated.

Two types of vaccines will be used for flu vaccinations this fall, according to information from the Chief Epidemiologist.

  1. A standard inactivated flu vaccine suitable for children 6 months of age and older and adults. The vaccine is expected to be available from mid-October.

  2. A live attenuated nasal spray vaccine intended for all children ages 2 to 4 and for children ages 5 to 17 who are in high-risk groups. Children who cannot use the nasal spray vaccine may receive the standard vaccine if appropriate. The vaccine is intended exclusively for these defined groups and cannot be purchased at health centers. It is expected to be available in early October.

High-risk groups given priority

Heilsugæsla höfuðborgarsvæðisins will follow the recommendations of the Chief Epidemiologist and prioritize vaccinations during the first few weeks for people in high-risk groups.

The date on which vaccinations will begin will be announced later.

The high-risk groups are:

  • People age 60 and older.

  • Children between 6 months and 5 years of age.

  • Children and adults with chronic heart, lung, kidney, or liver disease, obesity, diabetes, malignant diseases, and other diseases that suppress the immune system.

  • Pregnant individuals.

  • Healthcare professionals who care for people in high-risk groups.

  • People considered at risk of contracting both human influenza and avian influenza because of their occupation, as defined by the Chief Epidemiologist.

People in high-risk groups do not have to pay for the vaccination.

Vaccinations offered to others in November

Once the vaccination campaign for people in high-risk groups has been carried out, others will be offered the opportunity to visit a health center and receive a flu vaccination.

This is expected to take place in November, but the exact timing will be announced later.

People who are not in a high-risk group do not pay the standard visit fee at a health center but must pay for the vaccine according to the price list.
