Assessment – What and Why?
Assessment is a process involving observations, testing, and interviews with the child/adolescent and parents or guardians, as well as information gathering from other professionals. Assessment maps the child’s strengths and weaknesses in relation to environmental factors.
The purpose of assessment is to determine whether a child has a disorder, identify its nature and severity, and determine which interventions may be beneficial.
A multidisciplinary team of professionals participates in assessments at the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Center. The first formal evaluations following initial concerns are referred to as initial assessments. Comprehensive assessment is conducted when broader and more specialized evaluations are required based on initial assessment findings.
