Mobile phones and networks
Mobile connectivity is part of daily life for most people in Iceland. The Electronic Communications Office of Iceland works to ensure that mobile services are reliable, secure and stable across the country. The institution also provides information about the devices and systems that make connectivity possible. Here you will find information about mobile networks, how they work, and what support is available if your connection is unreliable.
How mobile networks work
Mobile networks (previously referred to as cellular networks) are based on wireless communication between your phone and transmission stations located around the country. When you make a call, send a message or use the internet, your data travels through the mobile network and then through the systems of telecommunications providers. In Iceland, public mobile networks are built on the following technologies:
5G – the newest generation, offering higher speeds, lower latency and improved performance
4G/LTE – fast and reliable, widely used across the country
3G/2G – older systems that have now been phased out
With the rollout of 5G, both service quality and the potential for new technological solutions increase, such as automated systems, high-quality remote meetings, and improved connectivity in crowded areas.
How do I find the best option?
If you are choosing a service provider or comparing solutions:
compare coverage in your area
check which network technologies your devices support
verify whether the provider supports VoLTE and VoWiFi
contact customer support if you are unsure
