Electronic Identification and Trust Services

Electronic identification involves the use of electronic identification credentials to verify the identity of a natural or legal person, for example when logging into an online service where authentication is required.

Trust services are electronic services that promote trust, security, and legal certainty in electronic transactions and communications, such as electronic signatures, electronic seals, time stamps, electronic registered delivery services, and website authentication certificates.

Such services can be used, among other things, to verify electronic signatures, confirm the origin and integrity of electronic data, and demonstrate that specific data existed at a particular point in time.

The Electronic Communications Office of Iceland (ECOI) supervises trust service providers in accordance with Act No. 55/2019 on Electronic Identification and Trust Services for Electronic Transactions. This supervision covers both qualified trust service providers and non-qualified trust service providers.
