BE Driving Licence Application Now Digital

22nd May 2026

The District Commissioners have launched a new digital application for BE driving licences on Ísland.is. The change makes the application process simpler and more convenient for applicants.

Before studies begin, applicants must apply for a study permit using the digital application.

The applicant selects a driving instructor and, where applicable, submits a medical certificate with the application. The medical certificate must be obtained before applying. If any document other than a valid medical certificate is uploaded with the application, the application will be rejected. The medical certificate is then reviewed and a study permit issued to the learner register.

Once the practical examination has been completed, the driving licence is ordered and the digital licence on the Ísland.is app is updated immediately. A physical licence is then sent by post or collected at the District Commissioner's office, according to the applicant's choice during the application process.

BE driving licences permit the driving of a category B vehicle with a trailer or coupled vehicle with a total weight of up to 3,500 kg.

The aim of the changes is to simplify the service and make the application process clearer and more efficient for applicants.
