More about the Icelandic Student Assessment System (ISAS)

The Icelandic Student Assessment System (ISAS) is based on the principle of a continuous assessment and teaching cycle.

The cycle begins when a teacher, school or municipality decides to gather information about students’ academic status by administering assessments. When results are available, they are analysed at both individual and group level.

Results are reviewed in the context of classroom teaching, alongside other relevant information and the teacher’s professional knowledge and experience. They may also be considered in relation to performance in other assessments.

After analysing and interpreting the results, teachers and school leaders plan or adjust teaching priorities based on the needs of individual students or groups.

Collecting information about students’ learning creates a professional and ethical responsibility to respond appropriately and in the best interests of students — especially if there are concerns about a child’s progress or if a group’s performance is weaker than expected.

Teaching is the most important part of the cycle. It relies on teachers’ knowledge, experience and collaboration. Teaching and support services must be organised to meet the needs of all students and to help each student progress based on their strengths and areas for development.

At the end of a teaching period, students’ status is reviewed again. When new results are available, the cycle begins anew.

By using ISAS data purposefully and systematically, schools can build a strong foundation for quality education. Regular assessment reduces uncertainty and supports informed decisions that guide students towards improved learning outcomes.
