Digital certificates no longer available in phone wallets
4th June 2025
Digital certificates will only be published in the Ísland.is app from 27th August 2025.

The issue of digital licences by public institutions in Iceland began in the summer of 2020. Digital driving licences were first issued for Android and Apple smartphones. To increase the security and functionality of licences, a change will be made at the end of August so that their publication will only be in the Ísland.is app. Information about licences and the possibilities for renewal will also be available on Ísland.is’ My pages.
Available public documents digitally are driving licences, machine and ADR rights, firearms licences, hunting licences, and disability cards. In addition, access to information about passports, the European Health Insurance Card, parking cards (p-cards) are available. In development are also the new identity cards issued by the National Registry. Digital certificates only apply in Iceland, and therefore, it is important that those who intend to drive abroad carry the plastic with them.
Two important dates are ahead for these changes.
1 July 2025 - New liceses are no longer issued, but older ones will continue to operate through the summer
August 27, 2025 - Digital certificates removed from phone wallets and accessible only in the Ísland.is app.
