80% of those who own electric, hydrogen, and plug-in hybrid cars have now registered kilometer status on Ísland.is My Pages or in the Ísland.is app. Registrations have now reached over 40 thousand. At the beginning of this year, the kilometer fee for using such cars came into effect and owners have until the 20th of January to register the kilometer status.

The kilometer fee is based on the number of kilometers traveled, so those who use the road network will be charged for usage. The fee will be 6 kr/km for electric and hydrogen vehicles and 2 kr/km for plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The first due date for the kilometer fee is the 1st of February and the final due date is 14 days later. Those who do not register their cars before the 20th of January will receive an invoice for the estimated use based on the average driving of a passenger car, or just over seven thousand krónur per month. With kilometer status registration on Ísland.is payments will reflect the real use of the car in question.

Continued support for the purchase of electric cars

The government will continue to support the purchase of electric and hydrogen cars, although the form of support has changed at the end of the year. It will be granted upon purchasing such cars instead of a concession in value-added tax. The Energy Fund will handle the grants. Applicants apply digitally on Ísland.is My Pages on. For more information on grants, please visit The Energy Fund website and Ísland.is. Therefore, substantial benefits of energy exchange for car owners will continue.
