Lífsbrú introduces an updated security checklist for suicide prevention

Lífsbrú – Centre for Suicide Prevention at the Directorate of Health has completed an updated security checklist to support safer environments in hospitals and treatment facilities, supported housing units, and nursing homes. The checklist has been developed in line with Action 3.3 of the Icelandic government’s action plan.

The security checklist is intended to serve as a reference for setting requirements for the construction and renovation of facilities where safety is of particular importance. The updated checklist marks an important step towards more targeted suicide prevention in the planning of premises, facilities, and service environments.

The checklist is intended for those involved in policymaking, planning, design, construction, operations, and quality management, and serves as a practical tool for supporting safer environments.

The security checklist is grounded in established knowledge and an evidence-based approach to suicide prevention. It emphasises reducing environmental risk and limiting access to methods, both of which are considered important components of effective prevention. The checklist is based on comparable international standards and has been adapted to Icelandic conditions.

One of the new features of the updated checklist is that it no longer assumes that an entire ward or area automatically falls under the same risk level. Instead, it recognises that different areas within the same ward or building may require different suicide-prevention risk assessments. For example, one section may be assessed as risk level 1, while another may fall under level 2 or 3. This makes it easier to tailor safety measures to actual conditions.

The security checklist has already been put to use. A major project is underway to expand and reorganise Forensic Mental Health Services within Landspítali - University Hospital, and the checklist has been used there from the outset. It is also used regularly in psychiatric wards at Landspítali to assess environmental safety and support improvements. In addition, the checklist has been used following serious incidents at other healthcare institutions to identify risks and assess the need for environmental improvements within the relevant units.

The latest version of the security checklist is available on the Directorate of Health website and will be presented to stakeholders and partners in the coming weeks. The aim is to raise awareness of the checklist, demonstrate its practical value, and support its implementation among those involved in development, renovation, operations, and quality work in relevant facilities.

Through this security checklist, Lífsbrú aims to help ensure that buildings and living environments better support the safety, protection, and well-being of those who rely on these services.
