Leagle Aid

Legal aid is when the cost of legal proceedings by individuals is paid by the Treasury. Legal aid is both legal action and legal defense and is only granted to individuals and not to companies or companies.

It is not possible to apply for legal aid in criminal or administrative proceedings or in foreign courts.

In legal aid cases, the Treasury pays the costs incurred by the plaintiff in the case, such as legal costs and the remuneration of a lawyer. However, legal action is sometimes limited to covering only certain aspects of legal costs or a maximum of a certain amount.

Fees to the lawyer of the plaintiff are determined in a court judgment or ruling.

The prosecutor or his lawyer shall seek from the West Iceland District Commissioner for settlement of the costs of legal actions.

Individuals may apply for general legal aid or law-bound legal aid, as appropriate, and if certain conditions are met.

More information on legal aid can be found on the government´s website.
