Refunds for legal aid

In certain cases, the government may acquire the right to charge the other party in a court case for a refund. This applies, for example, when the other party loses the case and is sentenced to pay the legal costs of both parties. The legal costs of the plaintiff have then been paid by the Treasury and the counterparty has to pay them back, either in part or in full.

The collection is in the hands of the North-West District Commissioner.

Collection process

When a claim is established, it is displayed in the debtor's home bank. The collection form is sent to the person's mailbox on Ísland.is My Pages.

If the claim is not paid 30 days after the collection letter has been sent and the claim is not negotiated, the following means of enforcing payment shall apply:

Payment distribution

A request for distribution of payments must be submitted in writing to the innheimta@syslumenn.is or by letter to the North-West Districe Commissioner. The minimum amount of monthly payments in the distribution of payments is ISK 10,000.

Note that you can pay a claim to a bank account 0159-267, ID 660914-0990. The identity number (kennitala) and name of the debtor must be specified when making payments to the bank. Payment can also be made by credit card.
