Intergovernmental agreements on social security

The mutual rights to benefits provided by social security are negotiated with other countries and foreign insurance institutions.

Iceland has concluded international agreements on social security with many foreign countries and insurance institutions. These agreements include provisions on payment of benefits to individuals living abroad, how to take into account residence, employment or insurance periods acquired in other contracting countries, equality of citizens of the contracting countries and more.

The countries of the European Union and EFTA States form the European Economic Area (EEA) and between these countries the social security rules of the EEA Agreement apply.

The Vaduz agreement between Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein and Switzerland is in effect, which has the effect that almost the same rules apply to Switzerland.

The agreement on social security between EFTA States, including Iceland, and the United Kingdom is in effect and took effect on 01.01.2024.

The agreements may vary in substance.
