Electronic tachographs are small computers installed in cars which record driving hours and rest periods on tachograph cards. The aim is to create a better working environment for professional drivers by keeping track of their driving and rest periods and improving safety on the roads.
Each driver has his own driver card which is inserted into the tachograph while driving.
The tachograph shall record the date of driver's driving, the car and whether any statutory rests have been taken.
Tachograph cards types
There are four different types of tachograph cards
Use of a tachograph card
Drivers must store the card and keep it in the tachograph when driving. The card cannot be removed during driving. The tachograph itself stores the speed trace for 24 hours and about one year of driving data, and therefore persons are double-registered.
