European Health Insurance Card
The rights of card holders
A card holder travelling abroad should not have to return to his/her home country before it was scheduled in order to receive the necessary health services. This does not, however, mean those parties who would be considered resident in the country in question.
A physician in the country of stay shall evaluate the state of health and necessary treatment. When reaching a healthcare provider, the European Health Insurance Card must be presented together with a passport.
The card is valid for
necessary medical services within the public health insurance system of the country of residence
necessary pharmaceutical services within the public health insurance system of the country of residence
hemodialysis and oxygen services as needed in another EEA country, United Kingdom and Switzerland, but special rules apply to these services. An agreement on such services must be made in advance (on time) with the relevant service provider.
The card does not apply
in the case of services provided in private healthcare facilities
if the purpose of the journey is to receive health services or special medical treatment abroad
on repatriation to Iceland or other changes to travel plans due to serious illness or death
Payments
The cardholder pays the same fee for health services as those covered by the national insurance system of the visiting country. This patient portion is non-refundable.
In some countries, pensioners and children pay a lower rate than others for health care. Individuals may need to demonstrate their status in order to enjoy rights accordingly, for example by presenting a disability certificate.
Additional insurance
It may be necessary to purchase travel insurance from insurance companies. Such insurances pay benefits for more than social insurance does, e.g. costs for travelling back home or for lost/stole properties.
