The Icelandic Medicines Agency may authorize pharmacy pharmacists to amend the prescription of a doctor for a particular medicinal product, so that the prescription applies to the exempted medicinal product that has been authorized.

This is one of the measures that can be used to reduce the effects of medicine shortage. The authorization is granted after a safety assessment of such a change.

This measure is only used in special cases when it is clear that without action it would be encumbering for both patients and healthcare professionals.
