Pensions abroad
People who have the right to a pension in Iceland can move abroad and receive the pension paid to an Icelandic or foreign bank account. The country needs to be a contracting country.
People living abroad when receiving an Icelandic pension apply for an Icelandic pension from the insurance agency of the country in question. The country needs to be a contracting country.
Information on foreign income and life certificates
Once you start receiving a pension allowance from TR, you must submit the following once a year:
Before 1 August: a copy of your and your spouse's (if applicable) tax return from your country of residence. If you file a joint tax return with your spouse, you both need to submit a breakdown of your income, for example, payslips or a statement of pension allowance.
Before 31 December: a life certificate. This can be on a TR form or a similar form from your country of residence. It must be formally certified by a public authority in your country of residence, for example, a social insurance institution, the national registry, municipal or tax authorities, the police, doctors or other public institutions.
If these documents are not submitted by the deadline, your allowance from TR may be suspended.
Please note, if you do not file a tax return in your country of residence because your income is below the threshold, confirmation of this must be received from the tax authorities in that country. You will also need to submit a copy of your pension and/or salary payslips.
Information on foreign address
When you start receiving an allowance from TR, we will register your foreign address as stated in the application. If you move from Iceland after you start receiving a pension allowance, it is important to inform TR of your new address. You also need to inform TR if you move between locations abroad.
If you do not provide your new address, your allowance may be suspended.
