Practice driving

Conditions for obtaining an accompanied driving permit

A candidate must usually complete a driving school 1 and 10 practical driving hours before applying for an accompanied driving permit.

The driving instructor

The driving instructor assesses whether and when the student is ready to start accompanied driving and confirms this in the candidate's digital driving education journal. The supervisor can then apply.

Car in an accompanied driving

A car used for exercise driving with an instructor must not exceed 3,500 kg. in total permissible weight. A trailer/attachment device up to 750 kg may be connected to the car. The car must be specifically identified for exercise driving. A student learning on a manually modified car may take exercise driving with an instructor on a self-replacement vehicle.

You don't have to apply specifically for a license for the car.

Accompanied driving signs

Driving schools have their students have signs/identification to mark cars used in accompanied driving. The identification is not allowed to be used for other driving. The permit for accompanied driving is not automatically enabled even if the sign is sent home.

Instructor in accompanied driving

A supervisor in accompanied driving session is a parent or another person who accompanies the cancidate in the driving session.

The accompanied driving

Accompanied driving is an additional exercise with an supervisor and does not replace driving with a driving instructor. In accompanied driving, the candidate practices driving a car under the guidance of a parent or other qualified persons. The supervisor is considered to be the driver of the vehicle. There is no fee to be charged for guiding in accompanied driving. In other respects, the provisions of Article 68 of the Road Traffic Act apply, as appropriate.

After accompanied driving, a few hours of driving lessons are taken with the driving instructor in preparation for the test.

Good advice for instructors in practice driving

  • Train at least one hour a week. "The exercise creates the champion."

  • Train the candidate well in parking, backwards and forwards.

  • Start with a quiet traffic and gradually move into more difficult situations to get used to both you and the driver in different situations.

  • Also train when the chances are difficult due to slippery conditions or snow.

  • Train your candidates to use lights correctly, such as when vehicles meet, in the dark or in the rain.

  • Always adjust the speed to the situation and, above all, do not exceed the maximum speed allowed.

  • Keep the goal of practicing the neck in as diverse situations as possible.

  • Be prepared and open to learn something new about traffic from your student because he/she has just finished his/her studies but it has been years since you were in driving school.

  • Use an eye-sup in the lower right corner of the windscreen to watch the student. Eye movements tell you whether he noticed the dangers or not.

  • Use an extra rear-view mirror to monitor traffic behind you.

  • To be prepared to intervene in the driving, you need to be on the guard and closely monitor all traffic that is near the car and the driver's intentions.

  • Avoid negative comments, but rather reinforce the positive things a student does.

  • You do not have a brake pedal with you, as the driving instructor. Therefore, decide beforehand with the sensor to give concrete instructions for emergency stop or emergency response.

  • Contact your driving instructor if things go wrong or the driving has become self-limiting.
