Only approved auto body repair shops are authorized to repair vehicles that have been registered as damaged vehicles in the vehicle registry. Approved repair shops request the removal of a vehicle's damage registration by submitting a certificate of repair for the damaged vehicle.
Approval of Auto Body Repair Shops
In order for a repair shop to be included on the Icelandic Transport Authority's list of approved auto body repair shops, they must pass an audit by an entity approved by the Transport Authority to audit the operations of repair shops. The role of the auditing entity is to ensure that the repair shop meets the requirements for approved auto body shops and documentation of data during the repair of damaged vehicles. Approval must be maintained through annual audits.

After a repair shop has passed an audit, its technical manager must apply to the Icelandic Transport Authority for approval as an auto body repair shop. Note that the application will not be processed until notification of the audit is received from the auditing entity
Requirements for Approved Auto Body Repair Shops
Have a certified quality management system that is audited by an entity approved by the Transport Authority.
Meet the Transport Authority's requirements for documentation of data during repair of damaged vehicles.
Have access to manufacturer's instructions on how vehicle repairs should be carried out.
Have an employee that has been authorized to issue certificates regarding vehicle structure.
Have an employee that has been authorized to issue certificates regarding vehicle wheel alignment or signed contract with another workshop that has an authorized personnel.
Have a technical director who must be educated in automotive mechanics, automotive engineering, technology or engineering. As of January 1, 2024, the person concerned must have the job of technical director as their main job.
The repair shop must be equipped with appropriate equipment for repairing vehicles according to the manufacturer's instructions.
To maintain approval, the repair shop must pass an annual audit by an approved auditing entity.
Approved car repair workshop do always have to fulfil these requirements. If there are any changes in operations, personnel matters or other matters such that the requirements are no longer met it have to be reported to the Icelandic Transport Authorities.
Extension of approval
Car repair workshops need to apply for extension of approval annually after they have passed annual audit by approved auditor.
It is allowed to apply for extension one month before the recognition date. If no application has been received one month from the recognition date the workshop will be removed from the list.
Applications are not processed until notification of the audit is received from the auditor.
