Sailplane Licence SPL (Part-SFCL)

To be issued with a Sailplane Licence SPL (Part-SFCL), theoretical and practical training shall be completed at a flight school authorised to train students in sailplanes. After completing theoretical studies at a flight school, theoretical examinations must be passed at the Icelandic Transport Authority.

SFCL.135 Theoretical knowledge examinations

Applicants for a BPL, SPL or PPL are required to complete the examinations with a minimum performance of 75 % in each subject. Examination in theoretical studies shall be conducted in accordance with a published curriculum guide containing nine subjects.

a) general subjects:

  • Air Law

  • Human performance

  • Meteorology

  • Communications

b) specific subjects concerning the different aircraft categories:

  • Principles of flight

  • Operational procedures

  • Flight performance and planning

  • Aircraft general knowledge

  • Navigation

Students
  • have 18 months to complete the tests counted from the end of the month when the first examination was completed

  • receive a maximum of four attempts at each qualification

Following theoretical examination

Student has 24 months to

  • complete practical training

  • pass a practical skill test with an examiner

Those who do not meet any of the above conditions must be re-trained at an airline school and repeat theoretical examinations from the Icelandic Transport Authority.

SPL (Part-SFCL) privileges

The privileges of the holder of an SPL are to operate sailplanes without taking payment.

In order to be able to carry passengers, pilots must have completed at least one of the following:

  • 10 hours of flight time

  • 30 take-offs

as PIC on sailplanes or powered sailplanes after the issue of the licence.

Along with completing one training flight with a flight instructor to demonstrate the competency required to fly with passengers.

To maintain the privileges to sailplanes (SPL)

the licence holder must have completed within the last 24 months:

  • at least five hours of flight time as PIC, or under the supervision of an instructor in dual/single pilot flight;

    • including 15 take-offs and two training flights with a flight instructor on sailplanes,

or

  • pass a proficiency check with an examiner.

To maintain the privileges to touring sailplanes (TMGs)

the licence holder must have completed within the last 24 months either:

  • at least 12 hours flight time as PIC or under supervision of an instructor in dual/single pilot flight;

    • of which at least 6 hours of flight time and 12 take-offs and landings, as well as one training flight with a flight instructor, which must be at least one hour

or

  • pass a proficiency check with an examiner.
