Rights of bus and coach passengers

The rights apply to bus or coach travel

  • that are 250 kilometres or longer.

Travel cancelled or delayed

passenger has the right to receive

  • information on the situation as soon as it is clear

  • information on new departures and arrival times

Delayed departure scheduledlonger than 90 minutes

and the scheduled trip is longer than three hours or the trip is cancelled, passengers should be offered a lift or ticket

  • refreshments

  • food and drink

  • accommodation when applicable.

If a delay in departure is scheduledmore than two hoursor cancelled

passenger has the right to receive

  • refund of full fare

or

  • choice of a new journey at no extra cost to passengers, at the first opportunity or later in comparable circumstances.

Compensation for delays

If you had a delay or cancellation, you may be entitled to receive 50% of the ticket price in compensation.

Applying for benefits

  • A statement with the dates, booking number and previous communications, within three months of the date of the trip or the date of the trip being scheduled, is to be sent to the carrier.

  • Remember to keep copies of all communications and assume it will take time to get an answer.

  • The carrier shall reply to a complaint within three months.

  • If no settlement can be reached, the matter may be referred to the Icelandic Transportation Authority.

 

Disability and impairment

  • Passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility have the same rights to travel as other passengers and should be able to travel without difficulties at no extra cost.

  • The carriage of disabled passengers and passengers with reduced mobility may not be refused except where this is impossible in view of the design of the vehicle, its transit points or on account of safety and health requirements.

  • The carrier shall provide assistance to the passenger free of charge or offer assistance to the assistant without an end-payment fee.

  • Disabled passengers and passengers with reduced mobility who require assistance must give the carrier 36 hours notice.

If aids are lost or damaged in transport, then they should be fully improved by the carrier.

Liability for passengers and their baggage

Carriers may be liable for compensation in the event of accident or death of passengers, and in the event of loss of and damage to baggage.
