Request for a binding tariff classification ruling

You can request confirmation of the tariff classification of a product before it is imported. This helps ensure that the tariff classification is correct.

A binding ruling means that the customs authorities cannot reassess import charges for the product covered by the ruling. Both the importer and Iceland Revenue and Customs are bound by the decision.

The process

  1. Send a request to Iceland Revenue and Customs
The request must be sent by email to upplysingar@skatturinn.is. Describe the product and request a binding tariff classification ruling.

  2. Submit information about the product
The request must include the information necessary to determine the tariff classification. The more detailed the information, the faster you will receive a response.

  3. Iceland Revenue and Customs responds within 30 days
You will receive a written response within 30 days from the date the request was received or from the completion of evidence gathering.

Examples of supporting documents

Examples of documents useful for tariff classification include:

  • A drawing or image of the product

  • A product description or brochure

  • A sample of the product

If you are unsure about the correct tariff classification before submitting a request, you can contact Iceland Revenue and Customs for guidance.
